Successful In-Line Testing of 6.5MW Traction Transformer Rectifier Unit

  • 19 Mar, 2025

Transformers & Rectifiers Ltd. is pleased to announce the successful in-line testing of our 6.5MW 33kV/1500VDC Traction Transformer Rectifier Unit at IPH/KEMA Laboratory in Berlin.

The rigorous in-line tests included comprehensive short-circuit assessments to validate the rectifier design for current division unbalance, diode failure risks due to transient junction temperature rise, and excessive mechanical stress caused by the rate of rise and magnitude of fault current. These tests were conducted in accordance with BS EN 50327 for Traction Converters and BS EN 50329 for Traction Converter Transformers as combined transformer-converter equipment.

Thorough Testing Procedures

The testing procedure comprised two key short-circuit tests:

Successful In-Line Testing of 6.5MW Traction Transformer Rectifier Unit
  • Test 1: Application of short-circuit power to the primary side of the equipment with a pre-applied short-circuit via a test shunt connected across the DC terminals. In this test, the Transformer, Busduct, and Rectifier were connected in line with the Rectifier DC output terminals shorted through a test shunt.

  • Test 2: Application of a short-circuit to the pre-energised equipment by closing a traction track feeder breaker connected directly across the DC terminals. This configuration involved the Transformer, Busduct, and Rectifier connected in line with a traction track feeder breaker equipped with full protection facilities.

The successful completion of these demanding tests ensures the reliability and robustness of our 6.5MW TRU equipment. This unit now joins our portfolio of high-accreditation Transformer Rectifier Units, which also includes our proven 3MW, 4MW, and 6MW systems.

Commitment to Innovation and Excellence

At Transformers & Rectifiers Ltd., we take great pride in our commitment to engineering excellence and innovation. The successful testing of the 6.5MW TRU further reinforces our position as a trusted supplier of high-performance transformer rectifier equipment for global rail infrastructure projects.
